Saif’s Story by Lucinda Sowerbutts
Saif greeted me with his trademark smile at Mahim Station, ready to take me deep into the narrow, chaotic alleys of Dharavi, one of the world’s largest slum communities. The alleys are hazardous, with exposed electrical cables dangling haphazardly, potholes underfoot and sharp objects overhead ready to catch you off guard. It’s hot and crowded, yet there’s a sense of joy and warmth and it’s home.
Saif lives in a tiny 3 storey house shared with 25 family members and three goats, the heat inside and out is stifling, living conditions are very challenging, but the spirit of his loving family radiates through it all.
Born in 2003, Saif’s early years were marked by hunger, poor sanitation and a lack of guidance. There was no mentor, no clear path forward until The OSCAR Foundation arrived at his school, Rajashri Shahu Nagar Municipal School. That’s where football found him and everything changed.
Through OSCAR, Saif was introduced to sport, education and life skills. He became a regular at every session, a naturally talented footballer and a curious learner. He quickly stood out, not just for his skill, but for his attitude. OSCAR coaches saw his potential and so did his community.
In 2018, Saif’s life took a leap. He was selected to represent OSCAR at the prestigious Donosti Cup in Spain and later that year, joined the ground-breaking UK School Tour. His departure was a moment of pride, his neighbours and family held a celebration, and 35 people travelled to the airport to see him off. Saif was the first in his family to own a passport and travel abroad. Two minute UK Tour film
On tour Saif had the opportunity to meet his UK sponsor, being part of the OSCAR Child Sponsorship Programme made him feel very special and meeting sponsor, Sydie Peck was a moment he’ll never forget. Sydie was a talented young footballer at the Arsenal Academy. The boys spent the weekend bonding, sharing stories, playing football and setting the foundation for the friendship of a lifetime. Sydie has gone onto great things, made his debut for the U18 England team and now a mid-fielder for Sheffield United FC and in the U20 England team.
“My entire family follows every step of Sydie’s journey. One day, we hope to welcome him to our home.”

Now, Saif is not just a well respected OSCAR Young Leader he’s an entrepreneur. He’s opened a household goods shop, launched an online shopping platform and is building a future that might one day take him and his family out of Dharavi. But he hasn’t forgotten where it all began.
“OSCAR gave me more than football. It gave me confidence, ambition and a voice. It gave me a path and now I want to help others find theirs.” Saif
