When I take OSCAR visitors to the incredible Dhobi Ghat laundry, I always tell them that despite washing 500,000 items a day, they never lose a single sock. Well… that isn’t completely true. They did lose something once, my precious David Beckham football shirt. I was heartbroken and I immediately went searching for a replacement. That shirt has been a treasured possession ever since.
Today, something happened that I never imagined, not even in my wildest dreams: I was invited to meet the man himself. A global icon. A legend. A superhero whose life seems larger than life, the former England captain, honoured with a knighthood, admired by millions. Not just a shining star, but a whole planet of inspiration.
Sir David Beckham came to meet the OSCAR girls and boys at the Cooperage Ground in Mumbai as an Ambassador for UNICEF. Such a humble and kind man, he interacted with the kids and our Young Leaders, kicked a ball, listened to their stories and signed the David Beckham portrait which hangs in the office. For 25 years he has used his platform to champion millions of children who lack access to healthcare, education, clean water and essentials. He is also the founder of the incredible Seven Fund. Thank you UNICEF for making so many dreams come true.
Today, Sir David showed up for all of us who believe in the power of sport to change lives. For those who believe girls must have the right to play. For everyone who sees sport not as a luxury or reward, but as a basic right, a force that unites, breaks down barriers, educates, inspires and above all brings happiness and smiles to so many young faces.
As someone who grew up in a Mumbai slum, I felt humbled and deeply grateful. To meet a person, I’ve admired for so long and to see him standing with our OSCAR children, lifting them onto his platform, was a moment I will carry forever.
David Beckham is an icon but more importantly, he is someone who uses his influence to lift others higher.
