Childrens Charity, India
By Sarah Angling
I am just coming to the end of the most magical, inspiring and unforgettable two weeks of my life. My plan was to go out to Mumbai and Karnataka to see the work of the OSCAR Foundation and discuss the possibility of spending a sabbatical term working with them. I just expected to meet some people in the offices, see a bit of OSCAR’s work and maybe teach a bit of English.
What I had was an incredibly warm and sincere welcome from a lot of busy people, who took time not only to tell me about their life-changing work, but also to invite me to their homes, take me to temples, walk up mountains with me, dress me up like an Indian princess, show me around where they live and introduce me to children full of friendliness and vitality, despite the difficult circumstances of their lives. I came to understand OSCAR’S important work well, and also to see India in a very personal and intimate way.
I am immensely grateful for this opportunity, and for all the planning and effort that went into welcoming and looking after me – I could not have hoped for more from this trip. The people I met were truly inspirational and their stories are a testament to the transformative power of what OSCAR does. I look forward to coming back next year to contribute in a small way to this amazing organisation.
I first met the OSCAR Foundation team at Malvern College in 2018. We were fortunate enough to host the most amazing group of young OSCAR girls who came on the life changing UK Tour. It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved and I loved introducing the girls to wall climbing. They took to it with energy and enthusiasm, which I can see now is how everything is approached at OSCAR!
