Childrens Charity, India
When I came back from the OSCAR Foundation University of Edinburgh Tour, people in my community shouted, “Here comes the UK boy!” My relatives told my mother, “No one from our family has gone abroad before. He is the first one.” At first I didn’t understand why it was so big, but then I saw, for many here, going there is only a dream. And I had lived that dream. It made me proud, not only for myself but for all the people who saw hope in me.
When I stepped on the plane, I knew this was not just a trip. It was the start of something big. I felt nervous, but when I saw London from the window, my heart filled with joy. People welcomed us with love. Meeting the OSCAR UK volunteers inspired me. They showed me how much difference one can make by caring for others.
In Scotland, everything felt like a storybook. At the University of Edinburgh, I saw how education can be open for everyone. At the Indian Consulate, we heard, “Never say never. Your position should not define you.” Those words gave me courage. At Hearts Football Club, I saw how sport brings people together. Meeting Mr. Mel Young taught me that problems will always be there, but we must keep our hearts open and be part of the solution.
We also met scientists at the Institute of Regeneration and Repair. I never thought science could be so fun. At the National Museum and Arthur’s Seat, I felt the importance of history, nature and good people walking with you in life.
This journey changed me. Before, I thought my background was a limit. Now I see it gives me strength. I dream of higher education abroad. Earlier it felt impossible, but now I believe it can happen with hard work and support. Already, four children from my batch have been selected for the 5th OSCAR UK School Tour in October 2025. That makes me proud, it shows change is real.
I came back, but a part of me is still there. I want every child like me to know: your background is not your boundary. It is your power. Work hard and you can go anywhere.
Special thanks to Dr Kev Dhaliwal for making this possible, Alexandra Moreira for the immersive itinerary and Iona Wallace for making sure the OSCAR team arrived everywhere on time!
Back home in Mumbai sharing my OSCAR journey.
