An Unforgettable Journey to The University of Edinburgh

“I experienced so much from this trip, it felt like a dream come true. I feel more confident in myself. I will carry these experiences with me and apply the lessons learned in my life moving forward. I have returned to India with a lot of experience and unforgettable memories.” Shivam

A select group of OSCAR Foundation Young Leaders, led by Ashok Rathod and Lucinda Sowerbutts recently embarked on an extraordinary educational journey to the University of Edinburgh, an experience that left them enriched, inspired and ready to return to India with fresh ideas and energy to uplift their communities. This immersive programme combined academic, cultural and personal development opportunities, exposing the young changemakers to knowledge, innovation and possibilities far beyond their familiar surroundings in Mumbai and rural Karnataka, Rajasthan and Daman.

From the moment they arrived, the Young Leaders were met with a warm Scottish welcome. One of their first engagements was with the Indian Consulate, where they felt recognised as ambassadors of Indiaโ€™s youth. Vice Consul Amit Chaudhary shared insightful career advice, sparking pride and self-belief.

A powerful highlight was their visit to Castlebrae Community High School. Here, they observed the Scottish education system delivering first class education in an area facing many challenges and they led a football session, showcasing how sport can transcend language and cultural barriers. The session was full of mutual learning and true exchange.

At the University of Edinburgh Business School, they attended sessions on investment, finance and entrepreneurship. For several Young Leaders, this ignited an interest in the financial world, with some now exploring careers in business and economics.

Another standout moment came during a workshop with Science Ceilidh, an organisation that uses music and movement to make science engaging. Through dance and rhythm-based storytelling, they learned creative methods to enhance teaching techniques theyโ€™re excited to bring back to their community sessions.

At Moray House School of Education and Sport they explored sport for development through hands-on tasks and reflective discussions. These sessions deepened their understanding of how play encourages leadership, inclusion and positive change, while giving them fresh ideas to strengthen their own programmes.

A particularly exciting part of the visit was to Hearts of Midlothian Football Club, The Young Leaders were inspired by how the club integrates sport, education and social responsibility and were thrilled to receive Hearts jerseys! At Heriot-Watt Universityโ€™s Robotarium, they explored cutting-edge robotics and AI, watching robots complete complex tasks and discussing how technology shapes the future. Interactions with professors, students and alumni further broadened their outlook on higher education and innovation.

At theย InsInstitute for Regeneration and Repair, the Young Leaders shared their personal stories with academics and postgraduate students. Speaking in English about their journeys for the first time, they received not just applause but genuine respect. It was an empowering reminder that their voices matter and deserve a place in global conversations around youth development and education rights.

The personal milestones continued. For many, the trip included their first swimming lesson, an experience that ended with a lively game of water polo, filled with joy and a sense of achievement. Thank you University of Edinburgh Sport for giving our group extra time!

Cultural highlights were just as enriching. They explored the vast halls of the National Museum of Scotland, visited the iconic Edinburgh Castle and took on the challenge of hiking Arthurโ€™s Seat an unforgettable climb that taught them teamwork, resilience and perseverance. They also had great fun at the famous Sheep Heid Inn over a competitive game of skittles.

Every experience, academic, cultural or recreational contributed to the growth these Young Leaders are now bringing back to their communities. They return not just with souvenirs and selfies, but with new skills, perspectives and a stronger sense of purpose. They are more confident, creative and determined to drive positive change in their families and neighbourhoods.

This journey was far more than an educational programme, it was life-changing. It proved that young people from the most disadvantaged settings can thrive at world-class institutions, contribute meaningfully and return home ready to lift others. OSCAR believes in creating opportunities and investing in potential, because opportunity has the power to turn dreams into reality.

The OSCAR Foundation is incredibly proud of these inspiring Young Leaders and deeply grateful to all the Edinburgh partners who welcomed them so warmly. Special thanks to Professor Kev Dhaliwal for making this experience possible and to Alexandra Morriera for her meticulous organisation.

And finally, heartfelt thanks to our amazing Young Leaders, Suyash, Deepika, Sachin, Shivam, Pooja, Anita, Anil and Shafaq and to Anil Rathod for supporting us on this unforgettable adventure.
