Childrens Charity, India

Leading groups of UK students visiting OSCAR through the UK Government #TuringScheme was an exciting challenge. Lucinda Maโam and I spent weeks perfecting a two-week schedule while also integrating four UK gap year volunteers. After eight revisions, we finally balanced everyoneโs needs!
The Volenti (18 students, 4 staff), arrived with a strong football background and close bonds. Many came from communities like mine and were eager to experience a new culture. Their kindness, work ethic and passion inspired me to be more focused and disciplined. Despite the 31ยฐC heat, they refereed for eight hours during the OSCAR Annual Football Day, showing remarkable dedication.ย ย
Two weeks later, the Chichester group (15 students, 2 staff) arrived. Unlike Volenti, they didnโt know each other, so I learned how to help them bond. Beth Hutchinsonโs leadership left a deep impact, reinforcing my belief in following oneโs passion. We also organised the โEnabling Change Eventโ, where students created an inclusive environment for children with disabilities and a Football Camp in Navi Mumbai, where Volenti volunteers played a key role in training young players.
This journey strengthened my leadership, time management and adaptability. Interacting with UK volunteers improved my English and broadened my cultural understanding. Seeing their dedication, whether refereeing in the heat or working with children, motivated me to push myself harder. Above all, I formed lifelong friendships and gained invaluable lessons Iโll carry forward and hopefully they have returned home with memories to treasure forever.ย ย
“This journey was was an opportunity for learning, growth and building friendships. I will always cherish these moments and carry the lessons I learned into my personal and professional life. I am grateful to Ashok Sir, Lucinda Maโam and Stuart Sir for believing in me. Their trust and support gave me the confidence to take on this challenge. I am grateful for their guidance and encouragement, which made this experience even more special for me.” Kumar
