“The variety of emotions I felt and witnessed with the OSCAR community has helped me to feel more, to learn and to be a better and more grateful person. It has shown me a blue print of the world.” Timothy Blundell
In January 2024 Timothy set off on a once in lifetime experience to spend time with the OSCAR Foundation in Mumbai. The ‘opportunity for personal and professional development’ is provided by the UK Government programme, The Turing Scheme. Timothy was hosted by Volenti Academy and selected from partner school, the London Nautical School.
“Volenti Academy, in partnership with London Nautical School, offers sports students unique and diverse international experiences funded by the UK Government’s Turing Scheme. Our trip to the OSCAR Foundation in India was incredible for our students. The experience enhanced their skill set and widened their cultural perspectives, aiming to improve their pathways to higher education and employment.” Stuart Christie, Director Volenti Academy
What was the most impactful moment when you arrived in Mumbai?
There was an explosion of impactful moments! The crazy traffic on the roads, the street vendors selling everything and anything, the crowds of locals with no awareness of personal space or queuing. I was offered ‘ear cleaning’ within minutes of arriving. I felt very tall compared to the locals and was invited to be in many selfies. I felt Mumbai was very safe, safer than London, until you want to cross the road. You have to be very brave, walk with determination and not dither. Visiting the community where many OSCAR children live was an experience I will never forget.
How did you witness OSCAR using football to empower and educate the children from low-income communities?
I think it is unique the way OSCAR uses something which really does link the world. You don’t need a common spoken language. Football is a universal language.
Can you share an example of how football engages and motivates children from low-income backgrounds to pursue education?
Most young OSCAR children do not have educated role models and are not encouraged to go to school. OSCAR uses football to teach them life skills, like fair play, being resourceful, having a good attitude, to overcome negative circumstances and get the most out of what they have. It is very inspiring to watch and be part of.
In what ways did the experience and challenge of travelling to India and working with OSCAR change your perspective on life?
My experience with OSCAR taught me gratitude, it gave me the opportunity to go on a plane, see a new country and learn about a totally different culture. It has given me a spirit for adventure. The variety of emotions I felt and witnessed with the OSCAR community has helped me to feel more, to learn and to be a better and more grateful person. It has shown me a blue print of the world.
